namie amuro was the first native asian artist i ever listened to. i got into her music randomly in 2008, when i saw the hide & seek video posted in a mariah carey post on ontd about the japanese vmas.
i thought the song was pretty cool, but didn't know what to make of the use of english words with japanese ones. nevertheless, i looked her up on youtube as a lot of her stuff was on there at the time (before avex started cracking down and only uploading a minute of the music videos). i listened to the play album and loved it. from there i only got more and more into her music and eventually listened to majority of her discography. favorites are play, past < future, concentration 20, queen of hip-pop (yes, hip-POP) and best fiction.

namie's style
when namie went solo after splitting from the super monkey's in the mid 90's she became an instant sensation in japan. her style, which included tanned skin, lip-liner, short skirts and chunky boots, made her a fashion icon to her followers who were known as amuraa.
